Story Sent in by Felina:
I was out with Rick when he asked me if he could borrow my phone. He said that his battery was dead and he wanted to check in with his mother, as she had just come back from the hospital. I let him use it and after a few minutes he handed it back to me.
We went out on a few dates but I didn't sense any long-term chemistry so we stopped dating. When I received my cell phone bill for the month, it was way higher than normal. Turns out Rick had called the Middle East on my phone! I called Rick to let him know that my bill was high because of him and to ask him if he'd help me pay it.
He said, "Do you want to go out again?"
I said, "Probably not."
He then hung up. I tried him back but it kept going to voicemail.
I knew where he worked so I called there and spoke to his boss. I didn't know who else to turn to without hiring a lawyer. Less than a week later, Rick mailed me the amount I was owed. Glad that worked out.

First things first, Rick was a douche for making international calls on your cell phone. I think we can all agree on that. With that said, when you lend a person you just met your phone, anything can happen. Calling a guy's work and complaining to his boss about something he did on a date seems pretty vicious. How much higher was your bill? Are we talking like $80 higher or like $500? At $500, I can completely understand. At $80, I think you suck that one up as a lesson learned.
ReplyDeleteI agree amount the amount differences, some lessons are expensive, but if it's a month's rent worth of expensive you have to take drastic measures. But I would have looked him up on facebook and called his mother instead of his boss.
DeleteSome people live paycheck to paycheck and an unexpected bill of even $50 more can cause hardship or other bills to go unpaid. Some people have a very tight budget.
DeleteSorry, I disagree. I don't think it was vicious to call his work, he'd already hung up on her and ignored her messages. If anyone was vicious, it was HIM. He lied and caused her a high phone bill, hung up on her and refused to pay until she got his boss involved. $25 or $500, why should it cost HER?
DeleteI say you go girl, who knows how many times he got away with it before because no one else got him to pay and sucked it up as a lesson learned. This way, she learned never to let anyone borrow her phone. After all the aggravation she went through trying to get him to do the right thing, it didn't cost her anything in the long run and maybe just maybe HE learned NOT to pull that stunt again.
Archie... these wh0re can't even pay for their own dinner... you think they're gonna let even a $5 phone charge slide?! Really??
DeleteWh0res. Don't. Pay.
I disagree because he had just defrauded her. And part of many jobs these days is a signed contract with a code of conduct. They also don't want someone to think of their company that way. Hey calling them is significantly so much better than complaining that one of their employees did it and it hurting their business.
DeleteI think you are WAY off-base with this one. This guy borrowed her phone under false pretenses and proceeded to rack up a bill calling THE MIDDLE EAST! When she approached him about it, he tried to use it and blackmail her into going out with him. When THAT didn't work, he ignored her AND the bill. He is the bad guy here, not OP. And if he got embarrassed or into trouble at work because of his behaviour then good! If more amoral assholes like Rick got into trouble when they did shit like this, maybe they would think twice before doing it again.
DeleteHe just wanted to make sure it wasn't too late. I mean, he didn't lie, right? He called his mom. He couldn't have know she'd react...
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about that Simpson's episode, spot on Archie Girl!
DeleteI really wanted the clip of Marge opening the phone bill after Lisa calls Brazil, or of the Australian father opening his phone bill after Bart calls to see which way the water circles their drains. But alas and alack, there were no clips to be found.
DeleteI mean... Thanks, Mel!

DeleteYeah, the Australian one with the father getting the phone bill is the one clip that is missing from the lot.Fun fact:Toilets all flush the same direction no matter which hemisphere you live in.What matters is which direction the jets in the toilet are pointing to.
